PV Armory reorganized

1999 — 10 Years Ago



News: Curl your tongue and purse your lips. It’s time once again for the Watermelon Seed-Spitting Championship in Pauls Valley. The annual contest has been going on since 1965 and Dessie Daugherty of Pauls Valley has won the championship for five years running.

Entertainment: Royal Theatre – Now showing. “The General’s Daughter” starring John Travolta.

Sports: The 1998 IPRA season marked the first time in history the association honored both a header and heeler as world champions in their respective fields. Ricky Bonner of Wynnewood and D.J. Connor of Perkins are the initial winners of the championship. The 28 year-old Bonner won the IPRA teamroping Rookie of the Year award in 1995.



1984 — 25 Years Ago



News: Truck and tractor pulling will make its debut appearance in Pauls Valley June 29 and 30 during the Washita Valley Pioneer Days celebration. Brenda and Phillip Haney were the points champions for 1983 in the 7,000 pound modified tractor class and they will be competing for top prize at Pauls Valley with their twin engine 1,200 horsepower tractor.

Entertainment: Royal Twin Theatre – Now showing on Cinema 1, “Breakin’.”

AG: The 36th Annual Garvin County Flower and Vegetable Show was held recently in the fair building in Pauls Valley. Group 4-H winners were Paoli with first place; Whitebead at second; and Pauls Valley coming in at third. Overall Grand Champion in the Vegetable Open Class was Louise Stevens, and taking home Overall Grand Champion honors in the Tall Flower Arrangement division was event chairperson, Louise Deaton.



1959 — 50 Years Ago



News: The Garvin County National Guard company based in Pauls Valley has been reorganized, it was announced Thursday. Formerly a heavy mortar company of the 179th infantry, it will now be known as A battery, 158th field artillery battalion. Second Lieutenant and Executive Officer, Bob Martin of Pauls Valley, said the company will train on 105 howitzers in place of the 4.2 mortars formerly used.

Entertainment: Royal Theatre – Now showing. “Rio Bravo” starring John Wayne, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson.

Sports: The rough-riding Oklahoma State Cowboys now rule college baseball after upending the Arizona Wildcats 5-3 in the finals of the NCAA World Series. Ben Bancroft whacked a homer and Bruce Andrew tripled in the winning run in the seventh inning to give OSU the crown, while a squeeze bunt by Connie McIlvoy added an insurance run.
