On hot summer breezes it is written

It does appear that during the hot and dry spells we are going through of late, there might just be a tendency to stay put and not venture to far from home. At least that is the way it seems at my house these past few weeks.

Coupled with this self-imposed dormancy, we might also find it challenging to delve into a good book, re-watch a favorite film or catch up on long overdue correspondence, both snail mail and electronic.

Why you ask? For my money, it may be that it is just too darn hot. And yes, with Tiger Woods sidelined for the remainder of the PGA tour season, even golf has lost its televised luster. So what’s a creative person to do?

Long ago I discovered that writing was a way of thriving, not just surviving, during these periods.

What makes the physical act of taking pen to paper or fingers to the key board so appealing varies from writer to writer, but for me, I look forward to savoring entries months and even years later.

But let’s leave that for a time, and fix our thoughts on today’s efforts. I am afraid that I am locked into the aforementioned and very same seasonal doldrums, and I need some assistance.

I have been attempting to complete four major writing projects over the last few years. Maybe committing these goals in print will nudge me into creating a bridge over the ever present creative gaps motivating me into finally getting them completed.

The most ambitious project is shaping up to be a compilation of narratives including the provenance for numerous items of memorabilia for the family in celebration of an upcoming and rather significant birthday.

Secondly, (and going as far back to 1999): I began an adaptation of a favorite autobiography into an oral and/or staged reading piece in honor of the centenary of the book’s author.

I have it basically completed, and now am facing challenges gaining permission so that I can develop it into a theatrical script for public viewing.

Thirdly, in what many define as the “Great American Novel” effort, I want to share a unique family history with a larger audience, but just what form does that take? I just can’t seem to get off square one.

Finally, I am also determined to develop another theatrical project; this will be a solo piece that can also serve as a template for others in authoring similar work.

There are many colorful and wonderful personal stories out there that need to be viewed in a theatrical space. Wish me, (or rather many of us), good luck.

Stay tuned: The Pauls Valley Arts Council will be hosting the Oklahoma Community Theatre Association’s, (OCTA) Board of Directors for their annual planning retreat later this month.

One of the oldest organizations of its kind in the country, OCTA is charged with assisting communities across the state in developing their long range theatre program.

Next week: A report from OCTAFest 08, celebrating the finest in Oklahoma community theater. Remember, there is always an opening night in this, not your ordinary small town. TAS.
