‘Hair’- parting company!

By Tim Smith
Pauls Valley Daily Democrat

After perusing my last two columns you might well assume that Peter and I had enjoyed enough of New York City for two lifetimes, but as I mentioned at the outset, this was anything but a typical vacation.

We maintained our balance between visiting ‘typical’ sites and those that only come when you are hosted by local residents.

Their ‘home’ just happened to be the Broadway community.

I remember we rode the Staten Island Ferry, not so much for the view, but I had heard about the coffee and donuts. (The views were spectacular, by the way.) Later, we went swimming for the first time (for me at least) in the Atlantic Ocean.

But we could not stray from the arts for long and these final encounters served as bookends to our trip.

A theater person must have their picture taken beside the statue of George M. Cohan on Times Square,”…at Broadway and 46th street in Manhattan. The 8-foot statue remains the only statue of an actor on Broadway.”

Mr. Cohan almost single handily brought musical theatre entertainment to the forefront of the emerging 20th century popular culture and is known as “the father of American musical comedy.”

We enjoyed ‘front row’ seats at the Village Gate to see comedian, Mort Saul perform.

In our party was Rogers E.M. ‘Popsy’ Whitaker…“an editor of The New Yorker magazine who was known to readers for his many contributions to Talk of the Town…and Goings on About Town.”

There to review Mr. Saul’s act, Mr. Whitaker was all business. Saul’s edgy and ultra trendy humor was a bit much for a certain 19 year old and I hope that my somewhat guarded responses did not get picked up in Mr. Whitaker’s final New Yorker notes. Imagine me, a career shaper.

Our host would secure Ed McMahon’s house seats for a taping of the original Tonight Show with Johnny Carson at NBC’s Rockefeller Center.

Sadly, Mr. Carson was off that night, (I would be able to see him twice at his new studio home in Burbank years later) and so Bob Newhart filled in as guest host.

Mr. Newhart, the former Chicago accountant turned comedian and today a television icon was delightful and so the “local Midwest” guys enjoyed that evening and our all too brief visit with “Dr. Bob Hartley” himself.

The memories generated during this special time and place, interfacing with those at the top of their careers, have nurtured me for a lifetime.

More importantly than the place they hold in my memory; when taken together, they continue to fuel an artistic passion that has shaped a lifetime commitment to the exploration of the creative vision I have been blessed and entrusted to use. Not a bad send off.

And while I have you here: My appreciation to the Toy and Action Figure Museum, the Pauls Valley Arts Council and the Pauls Valley Chamber of Commerce for assisting in the hosting of the board of directors of the Oklahoma Community Theatre Association this past weekend. We were a hit.

Remember, there is always an opening night in our town. TAS
