Some like it hot

Over the next long holiday weekend, take a few hours out and watch one of your favorite films. I mean, really settle in with the beverage and snack item of choice, the best seat in the house and by all means remember that possession equates to total control, of the remote that is. Now sit back and savor every line, frame and nuance emanating from your screen.

And, when you hear groans or sighs coming from the other rooms don't forget rule number one: You don't owe anyone an explanation for your film selection, and if truth be told, they probably would not understand anyway even if you sat them down and attempted to explain. Something about this particular film registers with the past, present, dreams realized and those not yet fulfilled. It matters not, this is your time, and as the commercial says, “now go out and take it.” Enjoy becoming reacquainted with an old friend.

The Billy Wilder classic, Some Like It Hot holds a place for me on so many levels and, as you might expect, included in there are one or two personal sidebars. However, more than any of that, it is just so darn fun to watch Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis strut their stuff, literally, as the hapless musicians who by wonderful design, (the script was nominated for an Oscar), are witnesses to the infamous St. Valentines Day Massacre and then spend the remainder of the film eluding the perpetrators. But in the 'eluding' is all the fun as they decide to dress as women and sign on with an all-woman band. With Marilyn Monroe and Joe E. Brown turning in equally rich supporting performances, the road takes the guys and the band to the famous Hotel Del Coronado near San Diego and there the story plays out to a broad, however all together appropriate, conclusion.

Lemmon was also nominated for the Oscar in the Best Actor category and the film's construction, the tempos used in building the story, if not already, should be studied at every film school by its aspiring actors and directors. The film literally sweeps you along as if you were the cinematographer.

Meeting Brown, visiting the Hotel Del Coronado with its memorabilia on the making of the film and walking along the beachfront where Curtis, Monroe and Lemmon held court would be enough for most, but the fact that it was released the same year that I began my journey in the performing arts is the tie that binds us. Each time I watch the film, I am reminded of that period. And every once in awhile, isn't it enjoyable to think back on how and when it all began? What film holds this importance for you?

And while I am thinking about it: Curtis is still very much with us and if you have a chance, try to catch his interview on TCM. Robert Osborne may be the best in the business and his questioning obtains yet another classic performance from this film icon.

Remember, there is always an opening night, in our town.
