OKLAHOMA CITY — American music legend Jimmy Webb will hit the stage March 24, 2006, at 8 p.m. for a special performance at Stage Center, with opening artist Kevin Welch.
The show, presented by Oklahoma City’s the Blue Door and co-sponsored by Oklahoma Today magazine, brings Webb, an Elk City native, back to his home state for an evening of classic songs such as “Wichita Linemen,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Galveston,” and “Highwayman,” along with many other gems from his forty-year career.
In 2001, Webb told Oklahoma Today that he credits his Oklahoma City piano teacher for helping him discover his abilities. “I always had a tremendous ear, and I say that with all due modesty. She was probably the spark that set me off on composing in the first place.”
Webb first achieved commercial success in the late 1960s as a songwriter, penning hits for Glen Campbell and others.
Since then his songs have been sung by a diverse group of artists such as Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, Linda Rondstadt, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, REM, Arlo Guthrie, and many more.
A gifted performer, his own recordings have become American classics, the most recent, Twilight of the Renegades, among his very best.
Currently, Webb is working on two Broadway musicals and a new album with Glen Campbell.
Kevin Welch is a popular Americana artist and regular performer at the Blue Door. Like Webb, he first found success writing songs. Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, and Waylon Jennings are just a few of the artists to record his earthy country songs.
Raised in Midwest City and now living in Nashville, Welch is regarded as a singular artist in the folk/country genre and one of America's most interesting singer/songwriters.
Oklahoma Today, the magazine of Oklahoma, celebrates its fiftieth anniversary throughout 2006.
The magazine most recently profiled Webb in its September/October 2001 issue. Back issues are available.
