Tomorrow’s Artists, Today

PVAC to host high school art show

By Jeff Shultz
Managing Editor

The Pauls Valley Arts Council will showcase the talents of 30-40 young artists next weekend with the first Pauls Valley High School Art Show in years.

“Into The Future: Tomorrow’s Artmakers, Today” will be held at Stark Art, 118 W. Charles, and will begin Friday, March 31, at 6 p.m. with an Opening Reception. The exhibit will continue Saturday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 2, from 1-3 p.m.

While the high school art students have shown their work before in other shows, an exhibit featuring only their work will be good for the program, said Bobby Reeves, PVHS art instructor.

“In previous years we have worked with the Junior High in what they are doing with their show, and will continue to do so. But, I think it is very important for a High School program to develop its own identity,” Reeves said.

“Our students work hard in this program to create quality art, and it is a good opportunity for them to show the public what they are doing, what this program is and will be about,” he added.

Reeves said his students will have between 100-125 pieces in the show, featuring a variety of art forms ranging from acrylic and watercolor paintings to drawings. The show will also include a large number of silk-screen and lino block prints.

The exhibition, Reeves added, will also take the high school art program to a new level, thanks to the support of the PVAC and the community.

“It definitely puts us on par with larger schools in being able to do some things with this program, above what one would normally expect for high school students. I would say that there are very few schools, especially this size, that have this kind of support,” Reeves said.

Further proof of the support the community has given the program is the passage of the recent bond issue that will bring needed improvements, including a remodeled art room.

“The new room will be a blessing for the kids as well as myself,” he said.

Such assistance is essential to building a quality school art program, Reeves noted.

“There are always students who will love what goes on in the art class, and are really into creating, and we have a good number of students creating quality work now.”

“With the development of facilities and the continued support of Mr. Russell and Mr. Campbell, and the support of the community, the sky is the limit for what these kids can do.”
