Job Fair deemed huge success

By Jeff Shultz
Managing Editor

Statistics from Tuesday’s Garvin County Job Fair show the county wide job push by area employers was a big success.

According to statistics from the Southern Oklahoma Workforce Board, 392 job seekers attended the job fair.

While a majority of those seeking employment from Garvin County area employers were from Garvin County, other job hunters came from as far as Dallas, Texas, the Oklahoma City metro area, Alabama and California.

“I thought this was a great ‘first’ job fair for Garvin County. We are glad to be a part of it,” said one official from the Wal-Mart Distribution Center, one of 23 employers participating in the job fair.

Darla Holt, Coordinator for the Southern Workforce Business Services Team, said the results of this first ever job fair were very good.

“Of course, the real test will be to see how many applicants are hired and retained from this recruiting effort. We will be sending out a survey to all employer participants soon to collect this data,” Holt said.

According to the preliminary surveys given to employers at the job fair, 21 employers said the job fair exceeded or met their expectations of the event.

“I have been pleasantly surprised at the turnout and I think everyone did a great job with advertising,” stated one employer in their survey.

A majority of the job seekers making applications at the job fair were deemed qualified for employment by the employers. Only a small percentage of the 392 job hunters were not qualified.

Some of the reasons job seekers failed to meet employment status were poor appearance and hygiene, little or no work history or experience, poor interview skills and lack of education.

Organizers of the job fair said they will continue to evaluate the success of the event and could hold another job fair in the future.
