Body discovered in search for missing girl

GOLDEN CITY, Mo. — Search crews found a body Wednesday afternoon while looking for a 12-year-old girl who disappeared from a park two days earlier.

Authorities have yet to confirm the body is that of the missing girl, Adriaunna Horton. However, the search for the girl has been suspended, said Sgt. Mike Watson, of the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Watson said the process of identifying the body discovered in an area northwest of Golden City could take 24 hours. He would not elaborate on what investigators found, or where exactly the body was discovered.

"I am not saying one way or another - identification has to be made - but there was a lot of hopeful people," he said.

The search for Horton began Monday evening, when she was reported missing from a park where she had been playing with her two sisters and friends. Witnesses at Hazel Park, a half-block from Horton's home, said they saw her get into a vehicle about 5 p.m.

Based on descriptions of the car, police stopped Bobby D. Bourne, of Lamar, Mo., about 6:30 p.m. He was alone in the vehicle, Watson said.

The next day Bourne, 34, was charged with kidnapping and held on $1 million bond. Bourne was an acquaintance of Horton and her family; his children played with Adriaunna and her siblings.

James Horton said his daughter had come home from the first day of school in a great mood then headed for the park.

Her mother, Wendi Jackson, who lives near Kansas City, traveled to Golden City to help in the search.

The search involved hundreds of police, firefighters, rescue crews and volunteers who used horses, all-terrain vehicles and helicopters.

Watson called Golden City a tight-knit community that remained hopeful for a happy ending. The city of fewer than 800 people is about 50 miles west of Springfield.

Details for this story were reported by the Joplin Globe.
