Holiday cheer opens shopping season

Pauls Valley Democrat — A number of Pauls Valley downtown merchants are planning a few surprises as they get the holiday shopping season going with an open house event later this week.

Leading the charge for a campaign called “Keep the Cheer Here” is a group of merchants who are members of Pauls Valley’s Economic Group, better known as the EG.

The open house event featuring many of those businesses in the downtown area is set to go from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

“It kind of launches the holiday season for Pauls Valley,” said Miki Tucker, who serves as the chairperson of the EG group.

“This is an annual thing by the merchants of EG,” she said. “We’ve been holding it for a number of years.”

The idea is to show shoppers they should check out the local shops first as they dive into their holiday gift giving for this Christmas.

“This is a push to get shoppers to come here first and see what we have,” she said. “We want them to take a look at what we have before you go out of town to go shopping. We want everyone to see our shops have a lot to offer.

“We want to show people they should go shopping here in Pauls Valley first.”

It all gets underway at 5 p.m. as participating businesses will unveil any surprises for their store front windows.

Those windows will initially be wrapped with decorative paper and signs promoting this year’s Christmas theme, “Keep the Cheer Here.”

Then comes that moment of drama as the stores reveal what’s new inside.

“This gives shoppers a chance to see what’s new at each store,” Tucker said, adding each store will also hold their own festive specials for Thursday night’s open house.

As for Tucker at The Nook, 204 S. Chickasaw, which is combining forces with Grassroots, visitors will be treated to a few tasty treats and maybe some hot cider.
