Swim lesson fun not far away

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Kids splashing around with a purpose will soon be a regular sight as the start of Pauls Valley’s summer swim lessons is right around the corner.

It all gets started in early June as the new local aquatics director, Robert Rennie III, says a few changes are coming for the lessons at the indoor Bosa pool.

Right now there are three sessions planned for the lessons with more on the way if needed.

Regardless of which session is best each one kicks off with an evaluation day. This is where instructors will determine the best class for each child.

“At the evaluation days we’ll be looking at the ability of each child,” Rennie said. “It will determine what level they’re going to be.

“It’s about skill level and age groups.

“We’ll also determine what the levels are going to be and how many classes we’re going to need for each age group. It will determine the classes we’re going to teach.”

The first evaluation day is at 10 a.m. June 7 with the initial session set for June 9-19.

Swimmers will also be evaluated on June 21 for a session running from June 23 to July 3.

Evaluation number three is on July 12 for a session on July 14-24.

“Everybody enrolled or has the intention to enroll for that session should come by that day,” Rennie said about the evaluation days.

One of the big changes coming is the frequency of the lessons.

Last year they came two days a week for three weeks.

This new set of lessons will meet daily four days a week, Monday through Thursday, for two weeks.

Times for those lessons are 9 a.m., 9:40 a.m., 10:20 a.m. and 11 a.m.

“The swimmers will get longer instruction with more components,” Rennie said, adding lessons are for toddlers with a parent, preschool age and youth.

There are also more sessions of swim lessons being offered than in the past.

“Last year there were two swim sessions,” he said.

“This year there are three sessions with an option for a fourth. If the interest is there I’ll look at holding swim lessons in the fall.”

Parents need to remember the cost for the lessons is $35 per child.

Anyone interested in getting the child signed up for swim lessons should register at the Reynolds Recreation Center.
