Driver asleep at wheel, maybe

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Authorities believe a sleepy driver might have been the cause of a one-vehicle accident and an Elmore City woman’s injuries early Monday morning.

Hurt in the wreck was 21-year-old Ashleh Ake.

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol report shows Ake was alone while driving a 2001 Honda Accord in a far southern portion of Garvin County.

The vehicle was traveling northbound on state Highway 74 when at a listed time of 4 a.m. Monday, June 30 it went off the roadway.

Troopers reported the car departed the road to the right as the driver then overcorrected to the left.

After going off the road to the left, the car next struck a concrete culvert as it rolled one and a quarter times coming to rest on its side.

Ake was pinned in the vehicle for about an hour at the wreck site about six miles south of Elmore City and just south of County Road 1710.

She was freed by Elmore City firefighters using the Hurst tool.

Ake was airlifted from the scene to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

She was admitted in stable condition with head, trunk internal and trunk external injuries.

Troopers investigating the crash listed the condition of the driver as “sleepy,” while the cause of the accident was termed as “apparently sleepy.”

Ake did have seat belts on when the accident occurred, according to the OHP report.

Leading the investigation was OHP Trooper Brian McGill of the Murray County Detachment.

Others assisting the scene were Garvin County deputies and Elmore City police and E.M.S.
