Plenty there for primary vote

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Early voting for the June 24 primary election wrapped up this weekend in Garvin County and all over the state.

Along with a couple of Garvin County area races the primary vote features a handful of state and federal elections.

On the Democratic side Bert Smith and Tae Si are running for the party’s nomination for U.S. Representative District 4.

Three candidates — Patrick Michael Hayes, Jim Rogers and Connie Johnson — are competing for the Democratic nomination for the unexpired U.S. Senate office with Tom Coburn retiring.

John Cox, Jack C. Herron Jr., Ivan Holmes and Freda Deskin are on the Democratic ballot for Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Democratic voters in Garvin County’s District 3 also have a race for county commissioner between longtime incumbent Johnny Mann of Stratford and challenger Mike DeArman of Paoli.

The district is located on the eastern side of the county.

Republican voters have plenty on the ballot with two U.S. Senate races attracting the most candidates.

U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe has four primary challengers — Erick Paul Wyatt, Evelyn L. Rogers, Rob Moye and D. Jean McBride-Samuels.

The Senate office being vacated by Coburn has seven Republican contenders.

They include James Lankford, Jason Weger, Andy Craig, T.W. Shannon, Randy Brogdon, Eric C. McCray and Kevin Crow.

The Republican primary for governor features incumbent Mary Fallin, Dax Ewbank and Chad Moody.

Three more candidates running for Superintendent of Public Instruction — incumbent Janet Costello Barresi, Joy Hofmeister and Brian S. Kelly — are on the Republican side.

The Republican primary also features incumbent John Doak and Bill Viner for Insurance Commissioner and Todd Hiett and Cliff Branan for Corporation Commission.

Voters in Stratford have Santee Wade and Stephanie Butenhof running for the No. 2 post on the Stratford Board of Trustees.

Sample ballots can be viewed at the Election Board here or at www.ok.gov/elections online.

The Oklahoma Election Board site also has a tool allowing voters to confirm their registration, find their polling place and track their absentee ballot.

Coming in late August are school bond elections for voters in the Wynnewood and Elmore City-Pernell districts.
