Interest could be big for this vote

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — One Garvin County election official is expecting a lot of interest from voters when it comes to next week’s election for two separate sales tax issues.

On the ballot for Tuesday, March 4 are tax measures for both Pauls Valley and Garvin County. Those voters living in PV will receive ballots for both.

This election will also be a big one for Doylene Cunningham, who just over a year ago was named to the administrative office of secretary for the Garvin County Election Board.

“I’m expecting a big election,” Cunningham said.

“It’s the biggest election since I’ve been here, with a countywide election,” she said.

Up for renewal is a Garvin County half-cent tax.

The tax in place since 2007 is again up for a seven-year term with revenue earmarked this time for the county sheriff’s department, county commissioners for roads and the county’s 911 dispatch center. A portion would go into the county’s general fund.

Another half-cent sales tax is on the ballot, this one for Pauls Valley voters.

If the measure is passed the tax revenues will go to make needed capital improvements at PV General Hospital, specifically updating the hospital’s diagnostic equipment.

Cunningham says there has been some confusion expressed to her office about the two different sales tax proposals.

“We’ve had a few calls from people wondering if they were eligible to vote in the Pauls Valley election,” she said.

Voters are reminded if both issues pass the sales tax level in PV would rise to 9.75 percent overall — an increase of 50 cents for every $100 worth of purchases made here.

Wednesday, Feb. 26 is the last day to request mailed absentees for the election.

After that it’s the early in-person absentee voting set for Thursday and Friday, Feb. 27-28.

Times are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days at the Election Board office, located on the ground floor of the county courthouse in Pauls Valley.

Yet another deadline is also approaching for a whole other election this spring.

Friday, March 7 is the deadline for voters to get registered if they want to participate in an upcoming election in Wynnewood.

This election is set for April 1 as a $20.3 million school bond issue in Wynnewood is on the ballot.

The Wynnewood issue, if passed by at least 60 percent, will go to build a new elementary school.
