The amount of good times available across Garvin County on Saturday, Oct. 26 alone could wear out just about any fall fun seeker and as a result the theme for at least Pauls Valley is to accommodate for a lot of coming and going.
Those involved in Main Street Pauls Valley certainly won’t stop those who want to experience each and every activity during the Living Dead Center Festival, but there’s a lot of flexibility for those who may need a break or two before the final event.
Starting with the Zombie 5K Run at 9 a.m. at the Main Street office, corner of Walnut and Paul streets, visitors will have the option to show up just about any time to check out other contests, competitions and even milder games for the kiddos.
The best example of this approach will be the Punkinpalooza, which has each one of its activities set up to where people can be a part of it as they have a chance to show up.
Be it the Field’s Pies/Homeland sponsored pie eating contest where one can see if they can set the bar for the most pumpkin pie pudding consumed in timed rush, the pumpkin seed spitting for the farthest distance, the pumpkin chunkin where one will hurl for a basketball shot into a barrel a miniature pumpkin or even a ring toss game, the atmosphere will go on as long as a person wishes.
The palooza is set to announce all the winners at 2:30 p.m. and will also include City Manager James Frizell’s donation to the Main Street cause, a pie in the face by one lucky winner from an all-day raffle. Those festivities are expected to end at about 3 p.m.
“All contests are come-and-go, so that contestants can show up at any time,” said Punkinpalooza leader Stephanie Webb.
“The best three scores will be posted, until their record is beat, to the end of the day when we have closing ceremonies to announce winners.”
The festival is also a chance to do one’s part to further support the ongoing needs of the local Samaritan’s food pantry through the parade at 3 p.m. at the Santa Fe Train Depot.
MSPV Board President Jesse Alvarado pointed out how everyone who feels like driving, riding their bike or throwing together a last second float is encouraged to participate and only needs to bring a small nonperishable donation, canned or boxed, by 2:30 p.m. when registration wraps up.
Celebrity judges have even been picked to award the best of the parade, which will be led by Oklahoma’s own spooky TV legend, Count Gregore, known to those who watched horror movies on Oklahoma TV channels starting back in the 1950s.
There will extended breaks in action before things wrap up before continuing in the evening with the Zombie Prom from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Main Street office, where people can show up in pretty much any costume they want to dance in. At the end a prom king and queen will be crowned.
“It’s more like a costume party,” said Alvarado. “Just come and get your boogie on.”
Events also set to be featured that day:
• A Zombie poker run that starts at 10:30 a.m., hosted by the Nasty Bastard Riding Club. Registration is $20 per person with a chance to win $100 for the best poker hand collected along the route, $50 for second. There will also be a raffle with all proceeds going to MSPV.
• A monster/zombie fashion show at 4:30 p.m. where people are invited to come and strut their stuff on the runway at the Main Street office.
• A showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the downtown office at midnight, tickets can still be purchased by calling and MSPV and leaving a message or by e-mail. Snacks will be provided like popcorn and props and costumes are encouraged.
• A blood drive will be hosted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the bloodmobile along West Paul Avenue.
