Box fan drive needs your help

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — It sure feels like summer these days as hot temperatures have arrived prompting most of us to find the coolest place we can find.

For some that’s not so easy without the help of an annual Garvin County drive that provides those in need with box fans.

Officials with Delta Community Action are now putting the word out the drive itself also needs some help as donated fans are being sought.

“We need fans,” Tina Casey said. “We don’t have any to give right now, but I think that will change when the word gets out.

“We’re asking for people to donate the fans.”

Fans or monetary donations can be dropped off at the non-profit’s Garvin County CAP office located at 225 West McClure in Pauls Valley or at Delta’s administrative offices in Lindsay, 308 S.W. 2nd.

Times for those donations are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, Casey said.

Both Casey and Karen Nichols, Delta’s executive director, agree the requests for fans will only go up as the sweltering summer heat lingers over the next handful of months.

“We’ve started a list of people needing help,” Casey said about the requests for box fans.

“We’ve already had several people from the area request fans and other types of cooling assistance,” Nichols added.

“Many of our clients are elderly, some are handicapped and others simply can’t afford to run air conditioning units all day,” she said.

According to Casey, once the fans start coming in they will go right back out to the people requesting one on a first-come basis. The one restriction is it will be one fan per family.

Casey anticipate the fan disbursement to continue for some time now that the summer heat has begun.

“Last year it seemed like we were doing it all summer long,” she said.

“We’ll do it as long as we have fans and people ask for them.”
