Bedlam can still help good cause

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Bedlam may be over for football this season, but a blood drive this week still looks to bring Sooner and Cowboy fans together for a good cause.

Stratford High School and the Oklahoma Blood Institute are partnering for a Bedlam blood drive at the school from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29.

Each blood donor receives the choice of an OSU or OU Bedlam blood donor T-shirt, health screenings and Donor Rewards Points, redeemable at OBI’s online store.

Donors with Oklahoma Blood Institute provide every drop of blood needed by patients in more than 140 Oklahoma medical facilities including Pauls Valley General Hospital.

Then  Pauls Valley High School will host an OBI blood drive from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, followed by a blood drive at the Walmart in PV, 2008 W. Grant, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.

Each donor will receive either an OBI T-shirt or ball cap, health screenings and Donor Rewards points.

Any donor who wishes to support the Global Blood Fund can forgo the T-shirt. In turn, Oklahoma Blood Institute will make a monetary contribution of similar value to the Global Blood Fund.

It’s a chance to ‘doubly give’ by saving a life locally, and making safe blood available in the world’s poorest countries.

“We’re blessed to be surrounded by giving people who respond when they know of a need,” said John Armitage, M.D., president and CEO of Oklahoma Blood Institute.

“The gift of blood is a life-saving one.  It’s difficult to think of anything more important that we personally can do.”

Although all blood types are needed, those with O-negative type blood are especially encouraged to donate.

According to the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), those with O-negative blood type make up only nine percent of the national population.

However, O-negative blood can be used by in any emergency situation when a patient’s blood type has not yet been identified.
