This is a 'good' tax

By Jeff Shultz
Publisher/Managing Editor

No one likes paying more in taxes. That's why we sweat and worry at this time of year, trying to pay the IRS and the state as little taxes as we can.

However, some taxes are good.

Several years ago when I was the assistant editor in Midwest City the City of Choctaw put a proposal before the voters in that city to raise the sales taxes so the extra money could go strictly for better roads and bridges in Choctaw.

It was an investment into the quality of life of Choctaw and voters approved the measure overwhelming.

This Tuesday patrons of the Whitebead School District will go to the polls to decide the fate of a $1.1 million bond issue. The bond issue, if passed, will pay for better facilities for the students and teachers of Whitebead.

It will also raise the property taxes of those living in that school district.

Now I'm not going recite all the numbers and figures associated with this property tax increase. Those are well documented in Barry Porterfield's story on page 1 of this issue.

Much like the Choctaw sales tax increase, this tax increase is an investment in Whitebead's future. It's an investment in the lives of each student of that school district and the quality of education they receive.

Without this infusion of funds to this school district, Whitebead will continue to operate in deteriorating facilities, thus creating a greater hardship for educators to properly teach their students in an unsafe environment.

It's important that voters in Tuesday's election not only support this bond issue, but also get out and vote.

Unfortunately, state law mandates the bond issue must pass by a 60 percent margin in order to be ratified.

Many school districts across our state have had bond issues fail because they didn't meet this requirement. The bond issue received a simple majority but flunked because it didn't get the mandatory 60 percent margin of victory.

It's a precondition that should be abolished. But that is a battle for another time.

Right now, it's vital that Tuesday's bond issue passes and passes by 60 percent or greater.

If you live within the confines of the Whitebead school district, then get out and vote Tuesday and champion a quality education for both the students and educators of Whitebead.
