Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — State Rep. Lisa J. Billy has been named the Oklahoma State Troopers Association’s 2011 Legislator of the Year.
“Maintaining public safety is one of the true core functions of government, and I am honored to receive this recognition for my efforts to keep Oklahoma families safe,” said Billy, R-Purcell. “As we face this tough budget environment, I will continue to promote policies that allow our state dollars to go further without sacrificing safety.”
As chairwoman of the House appropriations subcommittee on public safety and judiciary, Billy played a major role in developing this year’s budget for law enforcement agencies even in the face of a major budget shortfall. Thanks in part to her efforts, those agencies faced a total reduction of just 1.4 percent this year while the total cut to the state budget was more than double that amount.
Billy was also active in corrections reform efforts that will divert nonviolent female offenders to treatment programs. As a result of that reform, officials expect to spend less money rehabilitating those women while also freeing up space in state prisons for truly dangerous criminals.
