Holiday helper

By Jim Richardson
Pauls Valley Daily Democrat

For decades the name Field’s has been synonymous with delicious desserts and their pecan pies are highly sought after, especially during the holidays.

While their tasty pastries can be found at many grocery stores across Oklahoma, they can also be purchased at a discount price from the company’s thrift shop located next to their Pauls Valley production facility.

The largest number of customers visit the thrift shop throughout the months of November and December and the lady who fills their orders during this time is Pauls Valley resident Kerri Davenport.

“I work at the thrift shop Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. I’m working through the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, which runs this year from November 6th though Christmas Eve.

“I sell Field’s pie products which includes pecan pies, pumpkin pies, German chocolate pies, pie crusts, pie dough and one pound bags of pecans,” Davenport noted.

“Customers can come inside and buy our products or they can pull up to our drive-though window and remain in their car while I get their items for them.”

When she isn’t running the thrift store during the holidays, Davenport said she divides the rest of her time between duties at home, school activities and volunteer work at church.

The mother of three enjoys working with students in public schools so much her future plans involve returning to college to obtain teaching credentials.

“I’m a homemaker all year long and on occasion I baby-sit out of my house. I also substitute as a teacher at Whitebead Elementary. This year I worked with the third and fourth graders and last year I taught the first and second,” Davenport explained

“I also attend the Paul and Pine Church of Christ in Pauls Valley where I teach Sunday School. In January I’m going to start taking classes at East Central University in Ada and pursue a degree in Early Childhood Development.”

While she is very involved in the local community, Davenport is actually a product of Tuttle where she attended elementary school.

She later moved to Davis where she graduated high school and didn’t move to Pauls Valley until she got married to local resident, Jeff Davenport, 12 years ago.

In her spare moments Davenport enjoys spending time with her husband who is an Oklahoma City firefighter; her nine year old son, Thomas; her seven year old daughter, Katlyn; and her 17 year old stepson, Justus.

Davenport said the family especially likes to take trips in their RV with friends and other family members. Their outings usually consist of occasional campouts at area lakes, though their latest big venture took them to Disney World in Florida.
