Brinley tapped for Election Board post

Garvin County’s Election Board Office will soon have another election board secretary as Cathy Brinley, wife of PV City Councilman Keith Brinley, has been tapped to fill the post left vacant by longtime secretary Melanie Porter.

Sen. Susan Paddack recently notified the Daily Democrat she had nominated Brinley for the election board post.

“I’m very excited about Cathy taking this position. I think she will do a great job for the voters of Garvin County,” Paddack said.

Ardmore Sen. Johnny Crutchfield also submitted Brinley’s name to the State Election Board for consideration.

State Election Board Secretary Mike Clingman said Brinley’s appointment should come soon.

“We have to convene a meeting of the State Election Board first and that should come sometime this week,” he told the Daily Democrat.

For the past eight years Brinley has been serving as the Drug Court Administrator for Garvin and McClain Counties with her office located in Purcell.

She said her decision to take the election board post was based on her desire to work closer to home.

“The opportunity to work in Garvin County again came at a good time for me to hand over the (drug court) administration to someone new,” she said.

“I have worked with the program since January of 2000, and have really put in a lot of hours on developing the program, and working with the people. We had less than 20 participants the first year I was hired, and currently average 75.”

“My biggest regret in leaving is how much I will miss working with the other members of the Drug Court Team.

“They are a wonderfully dedicated group of people. They have all expressed regret at my leaving, but also support my decision,” she said.

Brinley said she was grateful to Senators Paddack and Crutchfield for their faith in her.

“I believe this is an important job, especially in these times, and I want to encourage everyone to register so they can exercise their right to vote.

“Being able to vote really is a privilege we sometimes take for granted, and more than that, I believe it is our duty to our community and to our country.”
