From the Files 11-16

Pauls Valley Daily Democrat

50 years ago:

Prairie fire burns 9,000 acres

1998 — 10 Years Ago

News: An overflow gathering of Pauls Valley residents packed into a city meeting Tuesday night to express their views on a new sports complex. The lengthy exchanges, and oftentimes debates, resulted in a “reluctant” approval of the proposal. Dubbed the Garvin County Sports Complex, the project is set to be located on a 58-acre plot of land just south of state Highway 19.

Entertainment: Now showing. “What Dreams May Come” starring Robin Williams.

Sports: • The Pauls Valley Athletic Department along with the gym floor committee have set up Saturday as a day of celebration for the new gym floor at the high school. The new floor is covered with blocks containing the names of area residents who made donations toward the sports project.

1983 — 25 Years Ago

News: According to a recent survey of Pauls Valley Middle School and High School students, 23 per cent have never taken a drink of an alcoholic beverage and 40 per cent have tried alcohol only two or three times. Seventy-six per cent said they had never tried marijuana and 52 per cent said they had tried it only once or twice.

Entertainment: Royal Twin Theater – Showing on Cinema I, “Smokey and the Bandit, Part 3” starring Jackie Gleason -plus- on Cinema II, “Beyond The Limit.”

Sports • Coaches for the first-round playoff game tonight between Stroud and Pauls Valley compare the teams fairly even. Both teams are 6-4 on the year and both started sluggishly at 1-3. Pauls Valley has scored 145 points and Stroud has scored 161. “If we don’t allow the big plays, it will be a water moccasin of a game!” said Panther Coach, Tim Reynolds.

1958 — 50 Years Ago

News: The worst prairie fires in years were touched off this week leaving some 9,000 acres of Garvin County ranch land devastated and an estimated damage between $100,000 and $250,000 to land, crops, cattle and fencing. The worst fire burned a swath nine miles long.

Entertainment: Corral Drive In – Alan Ladd stars in a whale of an adventure “Hell Below Zero.”

Brewer’s Drive In – Now showing. “Teenage Caveman.”

Sports: Harold Beaty, former Pauls Valley High School football star, seems to be filling in anywhere needed on the Cowboy football team at OSU. He has been playing tackle on the alternate unit and the lineup for this week’s game against Kansas has him playing at end.
