Thanks for the support

Pauls Valley — Dear Editor:

First and foremost let me say, I love Pauls Valley General Hospital. I dedicated nearly 18 of the best years of my life to try to make it a better place for the patients, employees, doctors and our entire community.

I am very proud when I look back to see what we have accomplished during that time. To name just a few things:

The formation of a successful and well funded Hospital Foundation in 1995, the addition of 24/7 physician coverage in our Emergency Room, the addition of Home Health, Hospice and Outpatient Clinic services, the East Expansion and renovation of the hospital completed in 1999, the addition of a permanent and upgraded CT unit in the hospital, the addition of Precious Visits, a state of the art birthing suite, the building of The Willows, a first class assisted living facility, the recruitment of many fine doctors to our area and, soon to be completed, the first MRI unit in Garvin County.

With 14 out of 17 profitable years of operation, I am very proud to say, unlike most rural hospitals across the nation, we accomplished all of this without taking even one single penny of sales tax revenue from the public over the entire 40 years the hospital has been in existence.

As I leave my home town and a job that I took only because I didn’t want to see the hospital I watched being built as a PVHS student fail, I have a clear conscience and no regrets.

Yes, I probably could have taken more lucrative positions at larger hospitals during the early years of my employment here, but I’m glad I stayed.

And, I feel at peace to know that sometime in the future when I pass on, the Pauls Valley General Hospital Foundation will receive the benefit of a life insurance policy I paid for many years ago to help that program get started.

I appreciate all of the former Board members, doctors, hospital employees, and my colleagues who have spoken with me personally or called or written with your support. That has meant the world to me, thank you.

To the many excellent hospital nurses, technicians and employees I have served with all these years, it has been an honor for me to be your CEO.

You are the greatest! Without you, Pauls Valley General Hospital would not be what it is today. You have saved many lives, helped many people and Pauls Valley is very lucky to have you here.

As a final thought, I wish everyone a lifetime of good health and happiness, and I thank you for allowing me the privilege of trying to make your hospital the best rural facility in Oklahoma.

Charles W. Johnston
