Band benefit set in Maysville

Pauls Valley Daily Democrat

Pauls Valley The Maysville High School Band program is hosting a benefit concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 18 in the Maysville High School auditorium.

The concert will feature a bluegrass group from the Ardmore area that includes Mike McKee on bass and vocals, Walter Arrington on lead guitar and vocals, Bozo Schoonover on dobro, Toni Lawson on banjo and vocals and Joe McKee on rhythm guitar and vocals.

The group performs weekly in Ardmore and frequently at bluegrass festivals and events, including the Arbuckle Mountain Bluegrass Festival near Wynnewood.

They were featured at Ardmore’s esteemed Goddard Center two years in a row.

They perform mostly bluegrass and gospel music but occasionally delve into other types of music.

The band has a superstition about names, so they simply refer to themselves as “Group Therapy.”

In addition to music, the fellows in the band provide comedy entertainment between songs.

Also, some of the Maysville band students who took solos to contest this year will perform as part of the concert.

Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be accepted at the door as all proceeds collected will be used for instrument repair and replacement.

“The instruments in Maysville’s band inventory have been neglected for quite some time and are in dire need of refurbishment and many are too far gone and will require replacement,” band officials said.

“The band program is growing and these instruments are necessary for students who cannot afford to purchase their own.

“We invite bluegrass fans and band supporters to join us for an entertaining evening. Bring your friends!”
