Fireworks blessing for WW church group

By Jim Richardson
Pauls Valley Daily Democrat

When it comes to funding their various youth activities, the boys and girls at the Wynnewood First United Methodist Church have discovered fireworks to be an answer to prayer.

Under the supervision of their youth minister, the kids have operated Jake’s Fireworks stand west of Pauls Valley for the last four years and the venture has turned out to be quite a blessing.

“Last year we had $23,000 in sales and this year’s goal is $35,000. The kids get 15 percent of the total sales which has helped pay for numerous youth activities,” explained youth group leader Laurie Jarman.

“The proceeds have helped send the kids to church camp which is held each year at Crosspoint Lake,” Jarman said.

“The money raised also pays for trips throughout the year to things like St. Yootz Day, which is a Christian youth event held at Frontier City in August.”

Of the 15 kids currently active in the church’s youth group, all but two will be graduating high school in two years.

Jarman said she would like to set back some of the money raised this year from fireworks to help fund a ski trip to Colorado as a graduation gift for the youth.

According to Jarman, the fireworks stand will be open seven days a week through July 4, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Kids from the youth group will be on hand to help operate the stand along with adult volunteers from the church.

Everyone is invited to come out to the big tent on the south side of state Highway 19 just west of I-35 and purchase some items from their vast supply of fireworks and help support a very good cause.
