Tax bucks summer hot for some

By Barry Porterfield

Revenues from local sales taxes were as hot as the summer temperatures in July for many Garvin County area communities while others didn’t fare nearly as well.

Three of those cities, including Pauls Valley, led the way with solid double-digit gains for the recently passed month.

The monthly distribution of tax dollars from the Oklahoma Tax Commission in July resulted in Pauls Valley getting an impressive $81,000-plus gain over tax revenue numbers from the same time last year.

The total disbursement of nearly $404,000 resulted in an increase of 25.2 percent over local receipts in 2007.

In the category of use tax revenues PV had none reported for the month of July.

An even higher percentage gain — 27.5 percent — went to Elmore City after a revenue total of just over $24,000 was recorded. The gain over last year came to $5,190.

Elmore’s use taxes totaled nearly $800 for the month.

Next up was Maysville as a disbursement of almost $22,000 gave it an increase of slightly more than $4,000 or 22.9 percent.

A solid gain was also seen in Lindsay.

Total revenues in July added up to about $192,500, which gave Lindsay a gain of $5,550 or 2.9 percent over last year’s distribution.

Lindsay’s use tax revenues totaled nearly $8,000.

Paoli’s sales tax distribution of $3,157 in July resulted in a drop of $766 or 19.5 percent.

No use taxes were reported for the month in Paoli.

A decrease of $2,300 or 8.1 percent was seen in Stratford after it registered a revenue total of $26,500.

The largest drop came in Wynnewood after it received a disbursement of nearly $45,500 in July. That came to a decrease from last year’s number of $12,400 or 21.4 percent.

Use taxes for Wynnewood totaled $345.19 for the month.

July was also the county’s 11th month of receiving the funds from a half-cent county tax approved by voters in February 2007.

The county tax revenues added up to $126,543.

The disbursement of city sales tax collections returned to 505 cities and towns in Oklahoma totaled $116.8 million and showed an increase of over $10 million from the amount distributed to 501 communities in July 2007.

The use tax distribution of $7.5 million went to 342 cities.

In county returns, a total of 73 Oklahoma counties shared in a sales tax disbursement of more than $24.2 million. A use tax total of $1.6 million went to 59 counties.
