Coming home for alum fun

By Barry Porterfield

Football, tailgating and alumni — a powerful combination when it comes to having some fall fun during Pauls Valley High School’s homecoming festivities set for next month.

In the planning stages is a special alumni tailgating party a couple of hours before the Panthers’ homecoming football game with Sulphur on Friday, Sept. 12.

An equally important date is Sept. 1, which is the time when alums need to have their pre-order in for an alumni package that will be reserved for those interested in participating.

The idea of getting more PV alums involved really comes from Tina Hume and Gary Alfred, co-presidents of the Pauls Valley Alumni Association.

“This is something we wanted to do for homecoming,” Hume said.

“We wanted to get alumni more involved in homecoming. We don’t know what to expect. This is the first year we’ve done this.”

What Hume and Alfred are hoping for is to get as many alums as possible to take part in the get-together scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start on the day of the homecoming game.

The activities will take place in front of Wacker Park’s band shell located only yards from the football stadium as the game itself against Sulphur is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Anyone pre-ordering will for $20 receive an alumni package, which consists of three main ingredients starting with an alumni T-shirt.

There will also be a tailgate meal in the park that includes a hamburger, chips and a drink.

Then there’s admission to the game for each participating Panther alum.

Former PVHS band members can also chime in as an alum band could be formed if enough show up at the park’s band shell with their instruments for the homecoming event.

“We’re hoping for a good response so we can continue to do this in the future,” Hume said about the overall event.

“We would like to add to this with even more activities later on.”

Hume added postcards are also being sent to alumni to better get the word out and hopefully generate some interest.

All proceeds will go the alumni association, she said.

Those wanting to pre-order the alumni packages should call Hume by Sept. 1 at 405-207-7929.
