Fair fun, frenzy here again

The hustle and bustle of people and animals coming and going, at times almost in a frenzy, will again be a common sight in Pauls Valley with the start of yet another county fair this week.

The 89th version of the Garvin County Fair officially gets started Tuesday at the county fairgrounds located in PV’s Wacker Park.

Really getting things started is a district livestock show for Pauls Valley, Wynnewood and Stratford students earlier that same day at the same facility.

That’s followed by the start of non-livestock entries later Tuesday and the county fair itself, complete with some judging, on Wednesday.

Indications are all the work that goes into getting ready for the year’s second county show is just about wrapped up.

“All the preparations are coming along fine,” said Garvin County agent Bob Leadford

“I think most are done. We’re as ready as we can be.”

Activities in the livestock category get started Wednesday with judging set for Thursday when it comes to goats, sheep, market lambs, dairy and breeding beef cattle and prospect and market steers.

A full day of judging on Friday will focus on breeding swine and market barrows.

“I don’t know what we’re looking at with the numbers,” Leadford said.

“We won’t know that until the entries start coming in, but they’re never quite as big as the spring show.”

One of the changes expected for this fair is the first big push to attract interest for an open goat show.

As a result, Leadford said expectations are there for some big numbers in that particular category.

Wrapping up the entire event will be the Garvin County Horse Show scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Pauls Valley Round-Up Club Arena located next to the fairgrounds.
