United Fund offering tasty dinner

By Barry Porterfield
Pauls Valley Daily Democrat

Combine some tasty spaghetti sauce with a very quiet auction and you’ve got a recipe for a good cause.

When’s dinner?

A spaghetti dinner and silent auction for the Pauls Valley United Fund community drive is set from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25 at the county fair barn in Pauls Valley.

“This is one of our biggest fundraisers to raise money to support the different organizations in the community that we give funds to,” said Dottie Willis, secretary for the United Fund board.

“Last year we had about 350 people who attended and that’s not counting the take-out orders. We had quite a few people who came through.”

For a $5 a plate donation, diners get spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and a drink.

The come-and-go dinner is accompanied by an auction which features various items donated by individuals and businesses mostly from Pauls Valley and Wynnewood.

“We’ve been collecting all kinds of different items from businesses in the community,” Willis said. “We have a big variety for kids and for adults.”

Willis said about $2,500 was raised at the 2008 dinner, while the silent auction chipped in another $1,600 in donations.

The dinner and auction are part of the annual effort to raise money that will ultimately go to various non-profit organizations in the Pauls Valley area.

“Right now we’re in the middle of the big push for this year’s drive,” she said. “We’ve given to 30 or so organizations this year.”

The goal is to raise $70,000 for the community drive, which is expected to go through next month.

Pledge cards for the effort are expected to be distributed at this weekend’s event, Willis said.
