Help sought in EC cow shootings

By Barry Porterfield
Pauls Valley Daily Democrat

Authorities are now looking for a little help from the public when it comes to solving the mystery of some recent deadly cattle shootings in the Elmore City area.

In exchange for some useful information the owner of several dead cows has decided to pitch in and offer a reward.

That offer comes in response to a handful of cattle being shot and killed in the last three weeks.

The exact number of dead cows is five as all of those shootings came in the Elmore City vicinity with four belonging to one owner, officials from the Garvin County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.

“The owner would like to remain anonymous and offer a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of individuals involved in the shootings,” Deputy Chad Weeks said.

The first of the dead cows was reported around Oct. 24. The trend reached a total of five when yet another report came this past Tuesday.

According to Weeks, four of the targets were cattle in the same pasture, while a fifth was in a second pasture nearby.

In each case the animals were likely shot and killed at night as all are all highly suspicious.

“It’s suspicious because the four were in one private pasture with no hunting allowed.”

For now the deputy is simply looking for someone to provide more information about the shootings.

“We don’t know if this is malicious, an accident or what,” Weeks said.

“If anyone sees any suspicious activity we’re asking them to call me,” he said.

“All callers with information about these shootings will remain anonymous.”

To do that callers should contact Weeks at the sheriff’s office at 405-238-7591. If Weeks isn’t there at the time callers can leave a message and be assigned a number as a way of remaining anonymous.

Another strange part of the case is the fact raccoons, shot dead each time, were found near the bodies of all five cattle.
