Caretaker case gets closure

By Barry Porterfield
Pauls Valley Daily Democrat

Amended charges and a formal sentencing appears to have brought some closure to a case involving an Elmore City man accused of injuring an infant under his care last summer.

In the end the felony count of child endangerment was dropped against Johnny Ray Vanhorn, 40, as he took a plea agreement to lesser charges during a recent hearing in Garvin County District Court.

Vanhorn had initially been accused in July of being in charge of watching his girlfriend’s 4-month-old baby when the little girl suffered a skull fracture.

He later admitted to smoking some marijuana shortly before given the task of watching the infant.

Those accusations resulted in three formal charges being filed against Vanhorn.

The most serious of those was dismissed in late September at the state’s request as a second charge — drug possession in the presence of a young child — was amended to simple possession of marijuana.

It was this second count and a misdemeanor charge of paraphernalia possession that was involved in the plea agreement.

In exchange for a guilty plea Vanhorn was given a one-year suspended sentence.

He was also ordered to perform 20 hours of community service and be involved in a drug program. During his suspension Vanhorn will be supervised by the district attorney’s office.

The incident getting Vanhorn in trouble came on July 5. During the late hours that night authorities were contacted about the injured child.

Police reports filed at that time stated Vanhorn admitted to smoking the marijuana at a neighbor’s hours before taking the baby.

He claimed at the time to have been holding the baby in his arms when he walked into a kitchen and accidentally bumped the infant’s head on the door facing. The bump was described as slight but did result in a fracture, authorities reported.
