DA gets to come home

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — In a way she’s coming home as Laura Shaeffer is now one of the assistant district attorneys working in the office here in Pauls Valley.

Shaeffer calls PV her hometown since she was raised here and is a PVHS graduate. She’s also the daughter of Garvin County’s former associate district judge, Richard McClain.

“I love coming back to my hometown,” Shaeffer said.

“It truly is a genuine opportunity to come home.”

After graduating high school from Pauls Valley in 1982, Shaeffer went on to get her bachelor’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from the University of Oklahoma.

Graduate school took her to North Carolina, specifically Chapel Hill, where she earned her master’s degree in recreation administration.

She returned home to attend and graduate from law school at OU.

From there Shaeffer’s first work in the legal profession came as a prosecutor in the Norman and Purcell district attorney offices.

“I tried my first jury trial when I was in my third year in law school,” she said.

“I lost it but I learned I love being in the courtroom,” she said.

“I love people and I wanted to get in a profession where I could help people. In this area a lot of times you can help people.”

Shaeffer later went into a variety of legal areas, such as criminal defense, personal injury and worker’s compensation.

That work continued from 1992 until recently when she joined the DA’s office in Pauls Valley.

It came about when, looking for something new, Shaeffer was talking to her sister, who suggested she speak with Greg Mashburn, the DA overseeing the three-county region that includes Garvin County and her hometown PV.

She started working here back in September joining the three-prosecutor team that now includes Tara Portillo and Corey Miner.
