Sad moments with child abuse pleas

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The somber moments blanketed a Pauls Valley courtroom as a former voice of a familiar pro basketball team was sentenced Monday in a three-county sexual abuse case involving his own children.

The plea hearing and sentencing was for James Alan Miller, 44, of Harrah.

Miller once worked in the arena as the public address announcer for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

On Monday he was in the middle of some tearful moments on both sides of the case as Miller was given a whole series of prison time and suspended terms on the allegations he molested and abused his two young daughters and one son in three different counties.

With all the terms running concurrent, Miller was in reality sentenced to an 11-year time behind bars with at least 85 percent of that to actually serve.

A prosecutor in the case said afterward the plea deal is meant to get Miller in prison and bring a little bit of closure for the family members victimized by his acts.

“In our county we’ve had several discussions with the mother, and she didn’t want the girls to testify,” said Tara Portillo, an assistant district attorney in Garvin County.

“She was OK with the offer,” she said about the prison term offered in the plea agreement.

“She didn’t want to put them through it. She didn’t want the girls to even be there.”

In Garvin County the defendant was accused of molesting his daughters back in 2004 at their grandparents’ house in Stratford. One of the girls was believed to be 10 years old at the time and the other even younger.

It was these molestation charges filed here last November that drew Miller a term of 11 years in prison with another nine suspended for both charges.

Miller was also facing six counts of child sexual abuse in Pontotoc County on accusations involving the same two girls.

There he received 10-year terms and another 15 suspended for each of the criminal charges.

The accusations against Miller in Oklahoma County involved abuse against his own son.

For two counts of lewd acts with a child under 16 filed there, Miller was handed 10-year terms and 15 years suspended for each.

McClain County Special District Judge Jeff Virgin sat in to oversee the plea hearing held in a Garvin County District courtroom.
