School projects now on their way

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — It’s been a long time coming but three major building projects for Pauls Valley’s school district are now officially at the starting line.

The reason for that is three school board members gathered for a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to give their approval to the last of the bids for the projects included in a bond issue approved by voters this past spring.

It was just over three weeks ago when the board gave its OK to the majority of bids, more than $3.58 million, for renovations at the junior high auditorium, football fieldhouse and Wacker Park gym.

With this week’s meeting the board said yes to just over $177,000 in the last of the bids to complete the process and signal the official go for these long-anticipated projects.

For the board members themselves it’s an exciting time to see these projects get started for real.

”I’m really excited to get to this point,” said Jeniece Tate. “It seems like it’s taken a long time to get to this point and finally we get to see it started.”

”I’m anxious to see the end results,” said Joe Don Looney, board vice president. “I feel this is something the community can be proud of.”

Board President Michelle Wood, standing next to Looney at the moment, responded to his comments with a single word “ditto.”

The areas needing to go through the process a second time because initial bids were not competitive included concrete work, paving and walks, rough carpentry and wood framing and decking.

It was this past April when voters passed by a large margin a bond issue that included the renovation of PV’s junior high auditorium, a full make-over and expansion of the Panthers’ football fieldhouse and a variety of improvements to the park gym with most of those focused on the locker room facilities.

The work done so far on the projects includes gutting out the interior of the football fieldhouse. Work crews have been in set up mode for the other two projects.

Another part of the bond issue includes seven brand new school buses.
