Traveling choir to make PV stop

Pauls Valley Democrat — The reputation of Pauls Valley being a small town with large town entertainment options will soon be adding another such event thanks to the efforts of a couple of enthusiastic residents.

Featuring a taste of big city music in Garvin County on Saturday, April 13, the First United Methodist Church of Edmond will be bringing its traveling choir to the sanctuary here, welcoming everyone to a concert starting at 7 p.m.

For local Methodist member Evan Cherry, it’s not only a chance to see an hour’s worth of impressive singing by the 35-member group, but also a welcome visit from a church where he made his spiritual home before coming here a couple of years ago.

“To be a part of it is a great fellowship,” said Cherry, who actually encouraged the current choir director Judy Rogers to make this a tour stop and knew from singing with them firsthand how impressive performances could be. “I enjoy the music.”

The concert will be a mix of everything from classic church pieces to gospel and will feature tunes by the main choir, the men’s quartet and the bell choir, said Cherry.

Helping him spread the word is Jeanne Dark, another PV member who is excited not just from anticipation, but believes the music will reach everyone who attends on a personal level.

“I just think it will be inspirational for everyone,” said Dark. “We’re trying to get everyone else excited.”

There will even be something for kids with a puppet show, and Cherry noted how the choir’s sound is helped along even more since it has several members who also are students in the vocal music department at the University of Central Oklahoma.

The program itself is free to attend, though people are encouraged to donate something to the love-offering in order to cover travel expenses.

“They range all the way from classical to gospel,” said Cherry. “They have some excellent soloists from the university up there.”
