Pauls Valley’s school board members said yes Monday afternoon to a long list of bids for three major building projects now closer than ever to becoming a reality.
Four members of the board were able to gather for a special meeting as they ultimately gave their approval to bids totaling around $3.58 million in construction costs for projects OK’d by voters this past April in a bond issue election.
Those costs are for the renovation of PV’s junior high auditorium, a full make-over and expansion of the Panthers’ football fieldhouse and a variety of improvements to the Wacker Park gym with many of those focused on the locker room facilities.
The board approved the bids as recommended by officials with the CMS Willowbrook Construction Services company, which is working with the school district as construction managers for the three projects.
“With the board approving the bids we can now move forward with these projects,” Superintendent Darsha Huckabaa said shortly after the Nov. 26 meeting.
The excitement for Huckabaa and others is clear as discussions on these renovations and improvements have been ongoing for years in some cases.
“We’ve dreamed about this happening for a long time,” she said. “How many years have we been thinking about the fieldhouse. This time next year we’ll have the third phase of the junior high complete.
“This means a lot for the school district to move ahead. Our students deserve to have the best facilities.
“Now it’s all going to become a reality.”
Officials at this week’s meeting said estimates for the projects had the anticipated costs only slightly higher than what the actual bids showed.
With most of the construction areas getting an approved bid others will need to go through the bidding process again, such as concrete paving and walks, fieldhouse equipment and carpentry.
Over the next couple of weeks all the contracts should be wrapped up for the auditorium and fieldhouse projects. Actual work on those projects could begin as early as December.
One extra project also being done is all new lighting at PV’s football stadium.
Work on the park gym is not expected to start until after the basketball season in March.
Gym improvements are to include a new roof, renovations to the boys and girls locker rooms and building entry way, lighting, heating and ventilation upgrades.
Another part of the bond issue is nearly complete as five brand new school buses are already here and on the job, while two others are expected to arrive soon.
Factoring out the costs for the buses, board members were told about $4.1 million in bond monies is available for the three larger projects.
