bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Recycling will soon get a big salute in Pauls Valley on the very day meant to remind us all to keep it clean.

Coming on Earth Day, which is Tuesday, April 22, is a public celebration for the first anniversary of a new recycling center located just off of South Walnut in PV near Rush Creek.

The event looks to honor the first year of the facility by offering up activities for school children and inviting the public just to drop by and check out the fun.

“We’re celebrating the recycling center’s one-year opening,” said Lisa Driskill of the Garvin County Community Living Center in PV

“We decided to do that on Earth Day,” she said. “It’s a day where children and families and classrooms can come by for an hour or so. Kids can participate in each of our learning activities.

“This is an all day event, and we would love for the public to drop by.”

During the day a handful of activities will be set up near the recycling center as area teachers are invited to call in advance and schedule a time for their students to come and take part in the event.

“We really want classrooms, schools and teachers to bring their students,” Driskill said.

“We’re hoping this will be a kind of field trip for the schools.”

Activities planned are all related to recycling and health, such as a contest to see which class collects the most water bottles for recycling.

There will also be recycling education from Living Center representatives, tree seedlings from the state Forestry Department, T-shirts and “stuff” for kids.

The Grown for You traveling classroom from the Noble Foundation and the Farm Bureau will offer more information on how food grows.

“We’ll have a sorting station where kids can learn how to sort their recyclables,” she said.

“All the plastic water bottles collected by the elementary schools will be on display.”
