BrickFest, Hero Day to join forces

emann@pvdemocrat.com — The wait is finally over and the news is looking good for a BrickFest event this year in Pauls Valley.

It is officially moving from its traditional May time slot. This means not only will the traditions continue, but also it will be joined in the fall by an annual event on the rise.

Set for Saturday, Oct. 18, the streets will feature both ordinary citizens and visitors of the courageous variety as BrickFest teams up with International Superhero Day.

“We are also partnering with Main Street Pauls Valley to bring BrickFest in with it,” said Toy and Action Figure Museum Curator Kevin Stark.

“We felt by combining energies, we could make it an even bigger event and help to bring BrickFest back to the world class event it’s been in the past.”

For Stark and MSPV Director Lindsey Temple, the goal is to create something new and exciting by the combining their two events. This will be the third year for the International Superhero Day and the idea gained a lot of traction well before a date was set.

“We decided together that this is the best option…we had other options, we had other dates,” said Temple. “October is new territory for all of us.”

Though they will remain separate entities, their combined efforts will include matters like vendors, entertainment and food approval. They hope to get out the application for vendors soon.

The area mapped out for the festivals will be from the chamber office to the Santa Fe Depot, then down Paul Avenue and Santa Fe Street. Some of the early goals include bringing in street performers and having two stage areas and more will be released, as it is available.

Temple and Stark believe this will offer a better chance for nicer weather as the severe storm season in May has played a factor on occasion. It can also be a hot time of year for those in heavy superhero costumes.

Temple feels it will ultimately be a better opportunity to bring more vendors and more entertainment. She is not sure if this will become a permanent date for BrickFest. She said it is up to the community to decide if that will work or if it needs to go back to being in May.

“We’re actually just testing it out,” said Temple. “Until we get it right, it’s a work in progress.”

In the end, both want to make it clear they are trying to create more of a carnival like atmosphere instead of just a flatbed truck and booths. Temple believes people need to be proud of it and does not want to relive the past few years where visitors noted how they did not want to keep coming back.

“We’re looking at professional staging, decorating,” said Stark. “There will be a theme throughout... It’s going to be top flight, first class.”

Editor’s note: More on what is in store for the two combined festivals will be featured in an upcoming issue of the PV Democrat.
