EC students reach out to food pantry

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — A group of Garvin County kids put the giving spirit into this holiday season by helping out a food pantry that reaches out to many in need.

Offering a recent big boost to Delta Community Action's food pantry were a number of students from the Elmore City-Pernell school district.

Those Badger students joined various other local and area schools that held drives meant to help fill up the shelves of food pantries.

In this case the ECP students pitched in to help the Delta service — a food pantry which helps those in need throughout all of Garvin County.

According to Delta official Tina Casey, the drive provided a big helping hand, especially since there aren't any organized Delta campaigns meant just for the holiday season.

“They brought in around 700 pounds of food,” Casey said about the ECP students.

“That's about seven big boxes full of food. All the children did contribute to this,” she said about the drive led by the ECP Student Council.

“This was extremely important to us because canned goods are quite expensive.”

The way it worked is the ECP students helped out by holding their own drive as part of a larger food drive sponsored by the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

Casey says the ECP drive was important the Delta food supplies were in need after another drive held earlier this year.

“The letter carriers' drive earlier this year was important, but that food has dwindled down,” she said.

“We needed to restock our shelves. This drive did that.”

Along with the needed food, Casey said the drive was a great lesson for these students on giving.

“It's really good that these kids worked hard to give back to their community and maybe learn some lessons along the way,” Casey said.

Adding to the need is the fact more people are turning to the Delta food pantry for help these days.

“We've seen an increase of people coming in asking for food,” Casey said.

“People need to remember this is for all residents in Garvin County,” she said about the Delta food pantry. “We try to help everybody who comes to us or we send them to someone who can help them.”

Delta is located on the ground floor of a county building in Pauls Valley at the corner of McClure and Walnut streets.

Another one of those food pantries, the Pauls Valley Samaritans, is a group Casey says Delta works with well, especially when it comes to referrals for residents in other parts of the county outside of Pauls Valley.

“We work together really well,” Casey said about the Samaritans with a special emphasis on local activist Lou Hall.

“She's amazing. I've never seen one person do so much,” she said.
