While many in education take pride in being able to prepare their students for the rigors of the real world, often time success isn’t known unless they find out many years later.
Imagine when it came as no less than a pleasant surprise to Paoli High School Principal David Morris, who not only found out that many students were doing well, but how their efforts as a district were paying off at the next level.
What amounted to affirmation of a job well done be it educator or student arrived earlier this fall in the form of the “2012 College Readiness Award,” which recognized that more of it’s students were ready than in years past to pursue a degree.
“You get something like this and it really raises your spirits,” said Morris. “It tells us we’re doing our job.”
Presented by the ACT Southwest Region, the honor is determined by how many students take the ACT test as well as how much scores have improved over the past five years, according to their press release.
This makes Morris proud because out of all the high schools in the state, only 11 percent received such an honor this time around and amounts to 66 learning institutions.
Morris believes it is the perfect way to reinforce the previous year’s 100 percent senior graduation rate and for all of the students who did so well on the ACT, this means they don’t have to take remedial courses when they start a two or four year degree path.
He also said it shows how well they’ve done since another award qualification is that students have to stay in college and not drop out to be counted in the award tally.
In the end, Morris said it helps them feel more confident the direction they are headed despite so much emphasis being placed on report cards and end of the year tests.
He said some of the thanks also belongs in the community through supporting the hard work and it only happens when everyone collaborates in the effort.
“This award means that all our students have graduated and don’t need remediation,” said Morris.
“I think this says something for our community too... They’ve been taught the tools to hopefully continue on with their education.”
