Hospital rally starts with prayer

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Here it comes, a rally designed to bring people together and let prayer lead the way in one collective gesture of support for Pauls Valley’s hospital and its future.

Anyone and everyone is invited to come to the gazebo in front of Pauls Valley General Hospital at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19 for a community prayer vigil.

Those coming up with the idea for the special gathering say this is not so much about a sales tax election coming on March 4 to support the hospital, which continues to battle financial difficulties.

Instead, they said this is simply a way for people to come together and pray for the hospital.

“We feel it’s important to pray over our hospital; not just the hospital employees but the entire community,” said PVGH nurse Donna Sharp.

“We’re asking people to pray over our hospital and the entire town and the county,” she said.

“This is something we need to take to God. It’s a big deal. We want to all come together and pray for God’s will. This town needs a hospital. You’ve got to ask before you can receive.

“We encourage the public to pray about this sales tax and the need to keep a hospital open here.”

At the event there will naturally be prayers and likely some speakers offering examples of how important it’s been to have a hospital in Pauls Valley.

Along with the spiritual side, Sharp says the hope is to bring more public awareness to the tax issue and maybe get more voters out on election day.

“We have been talking about this for a long time, last year, long before this sales tax election,” she said.

“We talked about this prayer vigil long before the sales tax was an issue. Even had one scheduled before but it was canceled due to inclement weather”

Also on the PVGH nursing staff, Felicita Orellana says she attends a local church which has already gotten involved in its own prayers for the hospital.

“We pray for everything, but we’ve been doing that for the Pauls Valley hospital for a long time,” Orellana said.

“It doesn’t matter what your church or religion is; what’s important is we believe in God.”

Working with the nurses on this vigil is local pastor Perla Goody.

The local hospital is important, Goody says, but so is the community coming together for a time of collective prayer for its future.

“I’m hoping and praying we can support this hospital,” Good said.

“I’m concerned that it has the most updated equipment and the very best doctors for the community,” she said.

“We need to have a strong hospital here so that the caring staff can do the healing work they can do

“The sales tax is up to the people. Let’s get this hospital on the books as one of the best hospitals in the area.”
