EC man hurt while on I-35

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Questions still remain why an Elmore City man was standing on or near an area highway when he was struck by a vehicle over the weekend.

Injured in the accident was 22-year-old Bobby Howard Jr.

Howard was a pedestrian along Interstate 35 when he was struck by a vehicle Saturday night at a site in Murray County just south of the Garvin County line.

Lt. Jay Clary of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Monday little is known about how or why the Elmore City man was alone and on foot while out near the interstate at that time of night.

“We don’t know if he was trying to cross the highway or if he was just walking along the shoulder,” Clary said about Howard.

“We just know the person driving swerved to miss him but couldn’t.”

An OHP report shows Howard was standing in the outside lane of I-35 on the southbound side.

At just after 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4 he was struck by a 2009 Honda CRV driven by Daniel Burgard, 52, of Benbrook, Texas.

The same OHP report indicates the official cause of the accident was listed as “pedestrian action.”

The condition of Burgard was listed as “apparently normal” as he was treated at the scene for a minor injury.

Burgard was listed as wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.

As for Howard, he initially was taken in serious condition by a Murray County E.M.S. ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Ardmore.

He was then airlifted by helicopter to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, where he was admitted with head, trunk internal, arm and leg injuries. No additional information on his condition was available.

Investigating the incident was OHP Trooper Tommy Riddle of the Garvin County Detachment.

Assisting at the scene were other troopers, deputies from Murray and Garvin counties and Davis police.
