Murder suspect stays here for now

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The tragic stabbing deaths of a mother and her young son in Texas led to their alleged killer being captured this week right in Pauls Valley’s backyard.

Cedric Ricks, 38, is suspected of being the man who used a knife to kill Roxann Diana Sanchez, 30, and Anthony Reyes Figueroa, 8, during some type of altercation Wednesday night in Bedford, Texas, a suburb of Ft. Worth.

A third stabbing victim, a 12-year-old male, was hospitalized at Cooks Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, while Ricks’ infant child was unharmed.

All indications point to Ricks fleeing the scene in a big way as less than three hours after the deadly stabbings in Texas he was by arrested by Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers during a traffic stop on Interstate 35 west of Wynnewood and only a few miles south of Pauls Valley.

“He was captured by troopers and surrendered without incident,” said Garvin County Undersheriff Jim Mullett.

After being booked into Garvin County jail Ricks refused to accept his extradition back to Texas.

That resulted in state officials here filing a felony count of fugitive from justice against Ricks.

During a court arraignment shown by video, Special District Judge Trisha Misak set a 10:30 a.m. May 30 hearing time to look closer into the extradition issue.

The judge also accepted a prosecutor’s recommended bond of $2.5 million to keep Ricks behind bars.

Garvin County Assistant District Attorney Tara Portillo argued for high bond on the belief he’s a murder suspect in Texas who was possibly fleeing to family in Illinois.

“Mr. Ricks is sought in Texas for murder and attempted murder,” Portillo said.

“The state alleges he was fleeing to our state.”

The criminal case against Ricks started after Bedford police and fire personnel responded to a 911 emergency call at 8:42 p.m. Wednesday.

The call was for a stabbing with multiple victims at a local residence there.

When first responders arrived at the residence in the 1400 block of Park Place they found the victims, including the bodies of Sanchez and her young son.

The 12-year-boy found at the residence did have an unknown number of stab wounds and was taken to a local hospital, along with the unharmed infant.

Bedford police then got the word out they were looking for Ricks, who was driving a silver 2011 Nissan Altima.

Around 11:15 p.m. that same night Ricks’ vehicle was pulled over as he drove northbound on I-35. He was taken into custody by state troopers a handful of miles south of Pauls Valley.
