Today the day for big area vote

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — A hotly contested school bond issue in Wynnewood will soon get an answer as Tuesday, April 1 is election day.

On the ballot for Wynnewood voters is a $20.3 million school bond issue.

If passed by at least 60 percent support the issue will go to build a new elementary school in Wynnewood.

This bond issue, if approved by voters today, would pay for the new grade school to be constructed on the north side of town near the Wynnewood football stadium. It would house students up through the fifth grade.

With the district’s middle school building facing ongoing problems because of its location in a floodplain, students in grades six through eight would then be moved into the current elementary school.

Garvin County precincts open to 7 p.m. include:

• Trucks Unlimited, located on the northeast corner at state Highway 29 and Interstate 35.

• Bosa Community Center’s conference room in Pauls Valley, located near the high school campus.

• Wynnewood Senior Citizens Center, located at 804 East Robert S. Kerr.

• Walker Fire Department, located on County Road 3330 between PV and Stratford.

Two other precincts in Murray County will also be open for the election, Davis Public Library and Joy Baptist Church.

The next thing up after the Wynnewood election is the filing period for all kinds of potential races later in the year.

A number of county, state and federal offices are a part of the three-day filing period set for April 9-11.

A total of four Garvin County offices are included in the filings from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each of those three days at the Election Board office located in the county courthouse in Pauls Valley.

They include District 1 County Commissioner Stan Spivey, District 3 County Commissioner Johnny Mann, Treasurer Sandy Goggans and Assessor Barbara Strickland.

Other offices will be filing at the Oklahoma State Election Board in Oklahoma City.

One office is district judge as Greg Dixon is finishing his first term in the office after in 2010 he replaced longtime judge Candace Blalock.

Another office is the associate district judge in Garvin County.

Steve Kendall was appointed last year by the governor to serve out the term of the now retired John Blake

Also part of the filings is the district attorney for the 21st Judicial District covering Garvin, McClain and Cleveland counties.

Greg Mashburn of Norman currently hold’s the DA’s office.
