Derby races zoom in for holiday — Enthusiastic fans ready to thunder down the track don’t have to wait too much longer. The Hot Wheels Double Dog Dare Derby will soon turn the corner for Memorial Day Weekend.

Adults and kids alike will compete in head to head competitions on Saturday, May 24.

It’s a few hours of promised fun, starting with registration at 10 a.m. The races begin at 11 a.m. and a carnival atmosphere on the side.

“It should be a fun atmosphere,” said Museum Curator Kevin Stark, noting how there will be several carnival games for kids to win prizes from. “People are already asking for the new t-shirts… It features Rivet and Rivet Monkey in a head to head race.”

Much of what has made this a popular event for the tourist attraction will remain the same, save for moving inside the Arts & Cultural Center (corner of Paul and Walnut streets), said Stark. Traditionally it has been an outdoor event on the brick streets next to the museum.

However, even in the best weather, the climate has presented drawbacks from warped tracks due to the sun to the chance of severe spring storms.

“For years we have fought wind, rain, sun, humidity. I like having it outdoors, but it’s been really windy this year. It’s really hard to get it done when it’s windy,” said Stark. “Since it’s moving indoors, it’s a lot more concentrated, I think it’s going to be a lot more fun where we can control the environment.”

The arts center also allows time for everything to be set up ahead of time instead of the morning of in days past, said Stark. They also plan to deck out the center in automobile memorabilia that was donated by local residents.

Additionally, there may be something new for the main track and it could compliment secondary tracks people can play with while they wait to race. All it costs is $6 for the first car, $5 for each additional, and it is complimented by free admission to the museum for that person and their family.
