Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — One driver’s failure to stop at a traffic sign is listed as the cause of a three-vehicle accident near Stratford earlier this week.

State troopers reported a 1999 Chevrolet driven by Charles Edward Shannon, 31, of Ada went through a stop sign resulting in the multiple-vehicle crash and injuries to himself and two other individuals.

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol report shows Shannon was initially traveling southbound on a county road. As he was approaching state Highway 19 his vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign.

At the time Sunee Lynn Gibson, 33, of Dougherty was driving a 2011 Dodge SUV westbound on SH 19.

As Shannon’s car went onto the highway it struck the SUV sending it rolling into the path of a third vehicle, a pickup driven by Christopher Michael Soto, 32, of Elmore City, which was traveling eastbound on SH 19.

Soto’s truck then went off the roadway to the right and struck a fence.

Authorities list the accident at 4:39 p.m. Monday, April 1 at a site about 3 miles west of Stratford.

The worst of the injuries was believed to have been sustained by Soto, who was airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

Soto was initially listed in serious condition with trunk internal and arm injuries.

Shannon was airlifted to Norman Regional Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition with head, leg and trunk internal injuries.

Gibson was also listed as stable after being taken by Stratford E.M.S. to Pauls Valley General Hospital with head and trunk internal injuries.

The report filed by Trooper Tommy Riddle of the Garvin/Murray County Detachment shows all three drivers were wearing seatbelts while traveling alone when the accident occurred.

Listed as the official cause of the collision was “fail to stop at stop sign.”

Others assisting at the wreck site were Trooper Doug Brinson of the Garvin/Murray County Detachment, Pauls Valley firefighters and Garvin County deputies.
