Local show first for Paoli Ag Teacher

emann@pvdemocrat.com — Garvin County’s livestock show has always been one of the best proving grounds for all the students involved in FFA and 4-H programs.

It’s only part of a very busy schedule as participating students look for ways to raise the quality of agricultural standard.

For Ag teacher Lindsay Pritchard, it’s a special honor arranging her first such show for Paoli.

“It’s a reward for our students to have a shining moment,” said Pritchard. “To show off all the hard work they’ve done.”

Pritchard has had similar experiences putting together shows. She helped put together shows in Lawton prior to coming to Paoli.

She has been impressed by how much people in the community help meet the needs of the students. It’s a philosophy she knows will continue to pay off.

One of the biggest benefits of the show is that students will have to compete against each other for the biggest awards. It is primarily a way to find out where they have excelled and make improvements from there, according to Pritchard.

With the number of students showing animals growing from seven to 23, competition will be more intense than in year’s past.

“We will learn who has and hasn’t been working with their animals,” said Pritchard.

This is also a way for those that have contributed to the program like the Ag Boosters to see how well their investments have paid off. Companies or individuals donated everything from the sand and shavings in and around the pens to the prizes, said Pritchard.

The students will be displaying pigs, sheep, heifers and a doe goat. Prizes include belt buckles for the grand champions, garment bags for reserve grand as well as stocking caps for everyone who shows up and participates.

“They are very excited by the local show and have the community come watch,” said Pritchard. “I’ve learned from many personal experiences it’s really hard to do it on your own.”

The Paoli show is set for Monday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. in the bus/FFA barn. It will help set the tone for how prepared Pritchard’s students are for the “big show” that begins March 3 at the Garvin County Fair Grounds in Pauls Valley.
