Change comes on PV’s school board

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — One longtime member of Pauls Valley’s school board is ending her service, but not because she wanted that tenure to close out.

During a special meeting this week Michelle Wood stepped away from the board because she and her family have recently moved outside of the PV School District boundaries.

The board was quick to remedy the brief vacancy as members unanimously voted to appoint Craig Ensey as her replacement.

During Tuesday night’s meeting Wood said the move was needed because she and her family have moved into the new home they had built near Paoli.

Living outside the local school district means Wood was forced to bring an end to her time on the school board, which totals more than a decade as she was unopposed in earning her third five-year term late in 2012.

“We’re going to miss Michelle,” said PV Superintendent Darsha Huckabaa. “She has been a great school board member.

“She has been a very good supporter of the Pauls Valley schools,” she said.

“Even though she’s not on the school board anyone I’m sure she’ll still be involved in other ways.”

With all five of the school board members present, President Joe Don Looney told the group he had been approached by a number of people recommending Ensey as the person to appoint to the now vacant seat.

“There have been several people I’ve talked to; he comes highly recommended,” Looney said.

“I thought he’d be an excellent person for the board.”

The remaining board members agreed as Ensey is now set to be sworn into the office at the next regular school board meeting on Oct. 8.

“He’s very active in the school district already,” said Jeniece Tate. “He’d be an asset to this board.”

Looney stressed the board could call for a special election or appoint someone, in this case Ensey, to essentially serve out this first year of Wood’s full five-year term.

Instead, the board appointed Ensey with the filing period and next regular school election date not that far away.

“Whoever is appointed will have to file in December and run in February if they want the office,” Looney said.

The filing period is set for Dec. 2-4, while the school election, if needed, will be Feb. 11, 2014.

With Ensey set to assume the office at the October meeting, board members and others plan to also formally recognize Wood for her service on the local school board.
