Toy museum about to turn 8

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — Tasty treats, big colorful candles and a few surprises just for fun are all part of a birthday celebration for Pauls Valley’s Toy and Action Figure Museum.

Not so much a surprise is the museum will have free admission all day on Saturday, Oct. 19 as the attraction in downtown PV celebrates birthday number 8.

For curator Kevin Stark, the mastermind behind the museum, this birthday shows that all is more than well in toy land since it opened in 2005.

“It means we’ve gone far beyond the expectations of most people,” Stark said about what birthday number 8 means.

“We have become a positive attraction for Pauls Valley.”

In the past a part of the museum’s birthday included a big bash. This year it’s more of an invitation to come in for free throughout Saturday’s regular hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. just to check things out.

“In the past we’ve had a birthday party at night,” Stark said. “This year we’ll have the party all day long.”

With the free admission that day there will be cupcakes and refreshments, while they last, and all kinds of surprises with door prizes and an appearance by Rivet the museum’s mascot.

There will also be a couple of special inductions into the Action Figure Hall of Fame right there in the museum.

One is the Toy Biz line of toys for Lord of the Rings.

Another is the Kingdom Come line of toys for DC Direct, which includes a number of DC characters.

There will be a display in the museum featuring both lines of action figure toys, said museum director Jodi Wood.

For Stark this 8th birthday also shows how Pauls Valley and the museum are a perfect match for each other.

He says there have been times over the years when opportunities popped up where the museum could easily have relocated to another city.

Instead, it remains here as Stark believes PV and the museum really do help each other out.

“In every article ever written about the toy museum it always mentions Pauls Valley and where we’re located,” Stark said.

“We’re proud to be a part of Pauls Valley,” he said. “I feel like it’s part of Pauls Valley. It’s something Pauls Valley has become known for.

“When people think of Pauls Valley I want them to think Pauls Valley, that’s where the Toy and Action Figure Museum is.”

When it comes to next weekend’s birthday celebration Stark wants it to represent a big thank you to all the support given by so many people here.

“There’s been a lot of support from the community and we always appreciate that support,” he said.

“This party is our way of saying thanks to all the people who have supported us over the years.”
