Near tragedy after tire blowout

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — A group mostly made up of kids from south Texas averted tragedy when a tire blowout over the weekend caused a one-vehicle accident in the Pauls Valley area.

Authorities reported a total of seven people, all from Houston, Texas, were riding in a pickup that overturned a couple of times Sunday afternoon at a site on the southern edge of PV.

With none of the individuals believed to be wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred, only one sustained injuries severe enough to be admitted into a hospital, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.

The report shows Edwin Garcia, 31, was driving a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup southbound on Interstate 35.

At a listed time of 4:46 p.m. Aug. 18 the left rear tire failed causing Garcia to lose control of the vehicle.

The official cause of the wreck was listed as “unsafe tires.”

The vehicle then rotated and ran off the right side of the roadway about a half mile south of the highway’s exit and entrance ramp for Pauls Valley’s Airline Road.

OHP troopers reported the truck then struck an interstate sign overturning two times coming to rest in an upright position.

Two of the individuals in the truck were ejected when the crash occurred.

The report shows the two were Barbara Rodriquez, whose age was not available, and 1-year-old Ashley Tineda.

Both were taken by a Pauls Valley E.M.S. ambulance to Pauls Valley General Hospital.

The baby was treated for a head injury and released, while Rodriquez was airlifted to OU Medical Center.

She was admitted into the Oklahoma City hospital initially listed in stable condition with trunk external and arm injuries.

The other five individuals were also transported by ambulance to the Pauls Valley hospital.

Along with the driver, the others included Madison Garcia, 4, Claudia Garcia, 13, Keylin Rodriquez, 16, and Johnny Rodriquez, 8.

All were released after being treated for such injuries as to the face, head and the trunk external area.

The condition of the truck’s driver, in this case Garcia, was listed in the report at “apparently normal” when the accident occurred.

Officials also listed any child restraint equipment in the vehicle as not being properly installed.

OHP Trooper Doug George of the Garvin County Detachment was assisted in his investigation by other troopers and Pauls Valley firefighters.
