Mom charged with stabbing 8-year-old

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — A young boy’s knife wounds inflicted by his own mother now has a Stratford woman facing one felony count of child abuse and questions over her mental health.

The act that has Adah Renee Wise, 27, in trouble with the law came last weekend when she used a kitchen knife to stab her 8-year-son in their Stratford apartment. The boy had incorrectly been reported to be three.

The single criminal charge was filed against Wise in Garvin County District Court.

After evaluations at two different medical centers, it was Wise, constrained in handcuffs and escorted by a county deputy, who was led into a closed-door mental health hearing in a Pauls Valley courtroom on Friday afternoon.

Little was known about the incident for days as authorities overseeing the investigation were unavailable for comment and no information was being released.

Now an affidavit included with the filed criminal charge offers a more detailed look at what happened.

The filed document shows Wise essentially offered two different versions; at first claiming the stabbing was accidental as she fell into the boy during the morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 24.

Later it was revealed Wise has a bipolar condition and recently has failed to take her medications.

She eventually told Stratford police she didn’t know why she “attacked” the boy and was using the knife when “lashing at him.”

As for the boy, he was airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City when it was discovered a stabbing wound had lacerated his liver.

During questioning with officials, the boy claimed to be hiding by the couch when his mother got a knife and intentionally cut him.

”She cut me right there,” he said while pointing to his chest, according to the affidavit. “Right there on my heart.”

At first Wise told Stratford police she was cooking “wienies” for the four kids at the apartment. With them misbehaving she got a knife, she turned to get onto them and fell into her son as he stood right behind her.

Later on Wise told police she “went crazy and snapped or something” and thought she might have hurt the boy.

On the day of the incident paramedics initially assessed the boy as needing a few stitches on his chest. He was also treated for a cut on his leg before being taken to the Oklahoma City hospital.
